Target Audience
Healthcare professionals who focus on oncology as a therapeutic specialty: oncologists, breast cancer surgeons, radiologists, advanced health practitioners, nurses, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants.

Statement of Need
Breast cancer has become a primary focus of national quality assessment efforts because it is prevalent, effective treatments are available, and gaps in care exist. Although significant advances in the management of metastatic breast cancer have been made in recent years, these scientific discoveries are not being translated effectively into clinical practice. More consistent application of evidence-based medicine and timely integration of scientific advances could improve the outcomes of thousands of lives. This case-based activity will delve into 2 separate cases of women with metastatic breast cancer to discuss specific challenges and solutions related to the effective management of this disease.

Learning Objective
At the conclusion of these case studies, the participant will be able to:

1. Summarize current treatment options for the management of newly diagnosed triple-negative metastatic breast cancer
2. Effectively integrate NCCN 2010 guidelines and recent randomized clinical trial results to enhance patient outcomes in recurrent triple-negative metastatic breast cancer
3. Implement optimal use of trastuzumab for the first-line treatment of HER2-positive metastatic breast cancer, as per NCCN 2010 guidelines and relevant randomized clinical trial results
4. Employ NCCN 2010 guidelines to choose appropriate treatment for recurrent HER2-positive metastatic breast cancer
